I obtained this Chromebook at a discounted rate in exchange for my honest review.
Transitioning from Windows and MacOS to ChromeOS was remarkably smooth for a first-time user like me.
The initial setup only took 10-15 minutes, allowing me to quickly explore the OS's advertised simplicity, security, and speed, all of which it delivers impressively. Security features such as built-in virus/malware protection and software sandboxing are important to me, and the Family Link capabilities add an extra layer of control for device-sharing with children.
Booting up from a powered-off state in under 10 seconds is a standout feature, a welcome upgrade from my other devices and a personal favourite, the addition of a 360-degree hinge and touchscreen enhance its versatility, enabling "tablet mode" or "tent mode" for entertainment or gaming sessions.
While primarily not used for work, I tested Microsoft Office software and various apps and games from the Play Store, all functioning seamlessly on this capable device.
Despite a solid construction, it has a plastic chassis and is much heavier than expected, leading to discomfort during prolonged laptop use.
Marketed as the next evolution of Chromebooks, the Chromebook Plus boasts double the memory, storage, and a 2x faster Ryzen processor, delivering excellent battery life (more than a full workday) and it has a vibrant, responsive touchscreen.
One area for improvement would be the webcam, whilst adequate for most people, it's lacking the clarity found in similarly priced Windows laptops.
I recommend the Chromebook and ChromeOS experience with some caveats. Its bulkiness might not suit the target audience of schoolkids who need to comply with their school BYOD guidelines, and at full retail price, it may not offer great value. If it can be bought for under $700, it would make it more justifiable.
Overall, I’ve enjoyed the experience of using this device and appreciate the simplicity and speed of the OS. Maybe the next generation of hardware can rectify the few niggles that would make this a no hesitation recommendation for all.
