I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest opinion.
The Chromebook Plus ASUS CX3402 combines two of my favourite tech companies in a neat package.
Initial thoughts were good, the device comes in sustainable packaging, with minimum physical instructions. The device itself is heavy, but in the good way that most technology should be if you want it to last for years without issue. The set up was smooth and easy. I was possibly at a disadvantage due to having a Pixel phone and using Android for the past 12 or so years.
The display is bright and responsive. The sound quality is excellent, clear and fills the room with quality speakers. I love how the design is finger print resistant, and the speckled finish means it is unlikely to look like anything but a new laptop for many years to come.
Battery life is a strong point as well. I used the Chromebook for around 3 hours before recharging, but the indicator said it still have 53 minutes remaining. Connectivity is straight forward and all the apps work as they were intending to.
Onto the negatives. Although not a deal breaker, I was disappointed to find this was not a touch screen device. Imagine using Android only with a curser. The ability to tap on apps or input text via the screen, rather than the physical keyboard would improve the overall experience.
Unfortunately the main draw back of the Chromebook is the limitation on the software it can run. While apps from the Play store run well, a lot of Windows based software which many of us use in our daily lives (home or office) is not available offline. Other software that is designed for use on a phone or tablet can have issues when maximising and stretching to a Chromebook screen. These were probably teething issues, but it is frustrating that it is not compatible with Windows based software.
Overall, the Chromebook Plus is a decent effort, it is great value for money for the specs on offer. It will just take some time to get to terms with the limits on it software, and it loses a start for this reason.
