iRobot Roomba Combo j7+
Very impressive at both…

I am familiar with robot vacuums as we had a previous robot vacuum, a "dumb" one from the same company- it did the job well (and is still in use after 7 years, so I was already happy with the brand's longevity)
I was keen to try a more advanced one - with a bigger home now, and more hard floors, along with some rugs and carpeted areas -a robot vacuum that could also mop looked attractive.
Unboxing was easy and impressive - the packaging was stylish and solid.
The contents were -the robot itself, a dock/ charger/ rubbish bin, manual, some spares, a sample cleaning fluid and 2 mopping pads. All were well produced.
The dock/ cleaning hub is a little on the large size, but the robot itself is smaller and lighter than the existing one we have.
I set it to charge and then downloaded the app and set it up. Both of these tasks were easy.
Once it had run a basic "mapping task" it produced an automatic map of the rooms, which it got pretty correct - it passed the first test (a smart device should be smart)
Then I let it vacuum, it picked up a lot of dust, and got into places the previous model struggled with -another test passed. It's also mainly quieter when in use. It coped well with carpets, rugs and hard floors.
It then auto-cleaned itself and made a *very* loud sound when it emptied its chamber. This was a surprise, but I got used to it.
Then I set it to mop. Adding the mop pad, and the mopping liquid, was easy. I pre-wetted the pad based on some advice online, this helped it do its job.
It mopped very well. It had auto-sensed the rooms, so I set it to run a 2-pass mop in the kitchen area. The way the mopping pad lowers onto the bottom is very cool in use.
It does not like being picked up and moved, I found this hard to get used to (always moving the previous version) - but eventually I let it do its thing and use the app to direct it
I am impressed with its cleaning and mopping. It left the floors clean (and dry!) and it's really smart -dodges obstacles, gets into the hard-to-reach places and is very quiet in use (except for when it cleans itself.) The bags needed to allow auto-emptying also look like they might be costly and fiddly, but it is too early to say.
Positives -device size, volume level when in use, good amount of dust pick up, auto-sensing of obstacles app and setup, auto-emptying itself, mopping and general ease of use
Things to improve - attaching/ wetting mopping pads, noise when emptying itself, bags for emptying.
