QD-OLED is the Future and…
07/02/2022 07:57
The Samsung S95B QD-OLED is the most noticeable technological advancement since the release of HDR. I was excited to get my hands on a QN90A last year because I thought mini-led would be the standard for gaming for years to come. I knew Samsung Display was working on QD-OLED, but I didn't expect it until 2023. I'm glad they decided to release it this year.
If you aren't familiar with QD-OLED, it's a way of solving the brightness issue of traditional OLED by using Quantum Dots instead of traditional color filters that cause light loss. This technology will be the premium standard for OLED moving forward.
The build of this TV has a very premium feel to it. If you're used to LED TV's, you'll be stunned at how thin this TV is at around 1/8" thick. The back of the screen is brushed aluminum, which is a nice touch and probably helps with heat distribution. They also continued with the Q-Symphony feature, allowing the use of TV speakers in conjunction with select Samsung soundbars for a more immersive audio experience.
This year Samsung's premium TV's have 4 HDMI 2.1 inputs. Gone are the days of swapping cables between consoles and PC, which is good because you are going to want to witness how well this TV handles all of those inputs. The remote includes last year's addition of a solar cell and battery, which charges with ambient light in the room like a calculator. No more expensive batteries and e-waste.
At the end of the day picture is king and the S95B holds court royally. Coming from a mini-led, I had tapered my expectations, expecting it maybe a bit brighter than and W-OLED. I was absolutely blown away. For all intents and purposes, my eyes can't notice a difference in brightness between the QD-OLED and the mini-led. Not only is the S95B extremely bright and bold right out of the box, but it has the inky blacks you'd expect from an OLED. The most breathtaking aspect is the way it handles blues. I've never seen anything quite like it, and as a Samsung field technician, I've seen a lot. I'm so happy with the picture that I have no intentions of calibrating it any further.
My one complaint is the clunky new Tizen UI. It's full screen now, making the menu laggy and cumbersome. Hopefully with feedback they will change it in a firmware update.
If you're questioning whether this new tech is really a big change, pop into your local store and see it. You'll want to get one for yourself. I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest opinion.
