Almost Perfect

The unboxing and physical set up was a breeze and only 10 minutes because I was recording it, otherwise it would have been even faster. Opening the ink carts was as simple as ripping open the foil bag and the real challenge was not drinking them, good thing there is a warning. Just kidding, I have a functional brain. Not that I would have needed one for the installation of said carts, they slid right in after I removed the tabs covering the important bit of the cart.
Having set up the printer my next step was setting up the software. This is where I ran into a slight issue. The HP+ program is an optional and free program that lets your printer communicate with HP and has some other benefits for scanning and mobile faxing. Most importantly, however, it is needed for the Instant ink program, more on that in a moment. My issue was that the printer just would not register with the program.
Fortunately I had no need of HP+ in order to actually print. Using the sample photo paper my first print was a Red Tailed Hawk I shot (with a camera, calm down) in Pennsylvania. The print turned out to be much better than expected and I was immediately impressed with the quality. It was not perfect, however, and the blacks were very different from the rest of the print. When turning the print from one angle to another the blacks have a distinctly different reflectivity. The gloss of the paper is replaced by the black in these areas, causing a strange sort of reflectivity as if the paper is over saturated or matte in those spots.
For my next test I decided on a different photo I took in Pennsylvania, this time a landscape. I also tried a very unique style of paper, a metallic paper. This paper gives the print a subtle metallic shine and I was expecting the result to be pretty mediocre, as a specialized printer is normally needed for this type of paper to really shine, pun intended. I am quite pleased to be wrong. It turned out great!
Printing text was fast even in duplex mode. The scanner is fast but nothing special in terms of quality and is really there as a formality in our modern age. The file went straight to the PC and saved as expected.
The next day the HP+ setup worked fine and I was enrolled in the instant ink program in no time. This program monitors the estimated ink remaining and uses a card you set up to purchase more and ship it to you before you run out.
I received a special deal on this product for providing my feedback.
