HW-Q990C
Great Sound, but Quality…

The Samsung HW-Q990C sound bar is quite large and heavy. But with this heft comes strikingly clear audio with better-than-expected performance for Dolby Atmos and the sense of acoustic immersion it delivers.
With frustration upon inspection, we discovered our unit to have some defects in the housing. When setting the sound bar on the base of our Samsung 65" OLED TV it does not lay flat. Instead, the unit rises above the edge of the screen on one side and slightly below on the other side, just enough to catch the attention of your eye. The bigger issue, however, was the warped metal grate on the face panel which becomes very apparent with light reflections. It is unfortunate that these details were not captured in the factory. The shipping box was undamaged, so it is clear that Samsung needs to improve their quality control process. We have filed a support case with Samsung and hope they will follow-up to replace the defective unit.
Besides the significant concern with build quality, the setup process was very simple and the wireless speakers (TRUELY wireless speakers, unlike the wired-to-a-control-box wireless rear speakers on lower end models) paired with the sound bar in a very intuitive and reliable process. The wireless subwoofer could not connect at about 20 feet from the sound bar, but we knew that would be a stretch. Instead, it rests comfortably within the TV cabinet, a monster prone to attack with a mighty boom on command.
We are pleased with the wireless speakers and the connection has remained consistent and reliable. This sound bar can really push out some decibels! At 25%, the volume is already uncomfortably powerful during acoustic crescendos. I did not notice any distortion and degradation in audio at these levels. I did not attempt to bring this device to full power as it would have been just too much energy slamming into my eardrums. You won't have any issue filling your room with sound using this device.
One pleasing feature is the ability for some Samsung TVs to synchronize their built-in speakers with the sound bar. I was worried that the reduced quality of the TV speakers would bring down the level of quality from the sound bar, but this was not the case. It’s a great feature to utilize if you partner with a compatible Samsung TV.
Overall, I would recommend this device. It’s unfortunate we received a defective unit, but we hope Samsung will stand behind their product and make this right for us.
