Decent, but only with a…

Wanted to really love this monitor. The specs on paper sound amazing!
After researching it more while waiting for it to arrive I found complaints about brightness, the matt screen and banding issues. Complaints are subjective so figured I'd withhold my judgement.
Got the monitor and have to say SOME of the complaints are valid. I have 0 issues with the matt finish. The brightness is tricky. On 100% it's decent. Not nearly as bright as my other monitor but not dim to where you will flat out hate it. Just had to dim my other one so it wasn't so noticeable and I am fine with it.
The one area I am a little bummed on is the banding. On light backgrounds, more so gray ones, I can see many vertical lines down the screen. This is a shame for such a high end monitor. I've attached a picture example.
On other darker colors or bright ones I don't notice it but gray for sure is a mess. I've read you can play with the gamut or dithering to tweak things but that shouldn't be needed for something that cost about a grand in my opinion nor is it a proper solution but more of a work-around.
One thing I will add that everyone should do, which helped brightness a tad was go to the LG site and install the OnScreen Control application. This will allow the monitor to upgrade its firmware. You must have the USB cable hooked in. It does take nearly an hour to run also be warned. The other thing this will fix is a bug with games and some full screen devices switching to 4k mode or having troubles.
Pictures on the screen otherwise, if not a gray color to show banding, look great. Contrast is out of this world.
One other odd thing I noticed is it has a fan in it you can hear in a very silent room. That was a little surprise.
I like it having a remote, though wish it just had more buttons on the monitor too so I didn't have to keep it out or press buttons as much to change things but not a deal breaker.
Overall, I'd say if you can get it on a good sale or price it may be worth it. At MSRP I wouldn't purchase knowing the banding is so bad on lighter colors. Especially on a gaming monitor this can be a problem because you might be playing a FPS and it mess with you a little thinking you saw something while moving around and it was just the monitor banding that color you swept past.
So overall it's got great things and some really poor things going for it. Depends on your use case I guess.
