Appearance and Packaging
The cover of the package looks appetizing, but the actual appearance of the food inside isn't as appealing as the image on the cover, though still acceptable. The plastic tray holds the food in place well, making it easy to handle when placing it in and removing it from the microwave.
Fun Fact
On Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon Ramsay once visited a restaurant that served him a shepherd's pie made with beef. He was gobsmacked and explained to the server that what they had given him was actually a cottage pie, as shepherd's pie is always made with lamb or mutton. Thought it was funny to see this having Beef instead of Lamb :)
Nutrition Facts
The nutrition facts are a bit concerning, with high levels of total fat (32g, 41% DV), saturated fat (17g, 84% DV), and sodium (990mg, 43% DV). However, it does provide a good portion of protein and isn't too high in calories, while also containing a variety of vitamins.
Ingredients and Composition
The ingredient list shows mashed potatoes as the primary component, and upon inspection, the mashed potatoes do cover most of the food. The cover image, however, depicts a more balanced mix of mashed potatoes, beef, peas, carrots, cheese, and spices.
Cooking and Aroma
I microwaved the food exactly as per the instructions (4 1/2 minutes). After removing the film, which was easy, a pleasant aroma filled the air.
Taste and Temperature
The meal tasted good, with the mashed potatoes leading the flavor profile, followed by hints of cheddar, spices, and a little bit of beef, peas, and carrots. However, as with most microwaved frozen meals, the temperature wasn't consistent throughout the dish. Baking it in the oven at 250°F for 20-30 minutes might have been a better option for even heating.
Portion Size and Value
The portion size was satisfactory, and the cost of this meal is less than what you would pay at most fast-food restaurants, making it a budget-friendly option.
Overall Rating and Recommendation
If you're feeling lazy, have limited options at the office, are on a budget, and don't mind the high fat content, this meal might be a decent choice. However, due to the nutritional concerns and inconsistent temperature, I would give it a rating of 3 out of 5 stars.
